Dewsbury 10K

04th March 2012
A depleted field gathered for the Dewsbury 10K on Sunday, rearranged for March after bad weather forced the race to cancelled four weeks ago. With £400 on offer to the race winners thanks to sponsors Disken & Co Solicitors, there were still a few runners with high hopes of taking the win.

Thomas Abyu (Salford Harriers) leads the race during the early stages

In the end it was 2009 winner Matthew Bowser (Lincoln Wellington) who out sprinted Sean Connolly (Stockport Harriers) at the end of a wet race. Bowser (second for the last two years) was the only runner to break 30 minutes with a winning time of 29 mins 59 secs, a full minute quicker than his time last year.

Race Winners: Matthew Bowser (Lincoln Wellington) and Sarah Harris (Long Eaton RC)

Bowser and Connolly finished clear of Thomas Abyo (Salford Harriers) – the only other runner able to keep the leaders in view in the closing miles. Dan Garbutt (Durham City Harriers) was the best of the rest in fourth (30:36). First Vet was Carl Thachery (Hallamshire), with Salford Harriers the team winners.

Second: Sean Connolly (Stockport Harriers) and Helen Singleton (Wakefield Harriers)

The Ladies race was hardest hit by the change of dates, with many of the top runners not able to make the new date. In the end two runners were clear of the field, with Sarah Harris (Long Eaton RC) taking the honours in 35:23, Helen Singleton (Wakefield Harriers) on the return from injury was a close second (35:38) and Alison Dargie (Elswick Harriers) third in 37:49. Yamuna Thiru (Elswick Harriers) was the first Vet home and Wakefield Harriers the team winners.

Third: Thomas Abyu (Salford Harriers) and Alison Dargie (Elswick Harriers)
