Netherthong 10K

25th September 2011
140 runners gathered for the annual Nethethong 10K on Sunday, promoted by the local Junior School. The tough course was made more challenging by blustery conditions on the exposed parts of the course and even a little heavy rain for the later finishers.

Michael Hyde of the local club Stadium Runners set the early pace, opening up a small gap on Kev Lilley (Sheffield RC) as they pasted the 1 mile marker and headed up the first climb to Wolf Stone Heights. Race regular Charlie Haddy (Leeds & Bradford TC) held third, with half a dozen or so others in close order.

Julie Field (Stainland Lions) led the women though, with Bridget Coomber (Denby Dale) and Holmfirth’s Helen Standing in third.

As they crested the climb of Honley Moor (the highest point on the course), Lilley had caught Hyde and moved clear on his own, with Haddy still holding third. Positions in the women’s race remain unchanged, but with 4 runners all within sight of each other as they began the long downhill section, there was a chance for the better descenders to move up.

By the last steep climb (5.5 miles) Lilley was well clear and in the end had over a minute to spare over Hyde. Martin Hall put in a strong finish over the closing stages to get within 5 seconds of Hyde, but had to settle for third, with Haddy fourth and Salford Harrier’s Mark Seed fifth.

Julie Field held off Bridget Coomber to take the Ladies race, with Penny Ditchfield (Meltham AC) in third having passed Helen Standing on the long descent.

Second place: Michael Hyde (Stadium Runners) and Bridget Coomber (Denby Dale)
