Sandal Castle 10K

11th September 2011
Over 350 runners turned out at Pudgey’s Country Park for the Sandal Castle 10K in aid of Wakefield Hospice.

David Thompson (blue vest leads the way at the start)

As the runners set off with a nice tail wind, it was Steve Worthington (Lancaster & Morcambe), who set the early pace. Close behind were last years winner (and winner of the Penistone 10K the previous day) David Thompson (Barnsley AC) and Wakefield Harrier Christopher Ward. In the Ladies race Elizabeth Burrows (Wakefield Tri) had already opened up a gap on second placed runner Victoria Burrows-Bilton.

By the time the leaders reached the Castle itself, it was Thompson who had taken the lead and opened up a healthy gap over Ward, Worthington had dropped back a fair way after a missing marshal had cost him his lead. As they reached the lake with a kilometre to go, Thompson had a healthy lead, with Worthington closing in on Ward.

Race Winners David Thompson (Barnsley AC) & Elizabeth Burrows (Wakefield Tri)

Thompson took the honours – over a minute fastest than last year despite the strong wind, which was not only repeat of his win of last year, but also repeat of his weekend double (Penistone 10K & Sandal Castle 10K) of last year too. Worthington caught and passed Ward for second.

Second placed runners Steve Worthington (Lancaster & Morcambe) & Victoria Burrows-Bilton (Ackworth RR)

Third placed athletes Christopher Ward (Wakefield Harrier) & Angela Hannon (Pontefract AC)

Elizabeth Burrows (Wakefield Tri) was a comfortable winner in the Ladies race, with Victoria Burrows-Bilton (Ackworth RR) second and Angela Hannon (Pontefract AC) third.
