Thirsk 10

27th March 2011
Sunday saw the rescheduled Thirsk 10 take place on a flat fast course suited to PB's. Weather was good, much better than it is in November when the race is usually run.

First off was the wheelchair race, with the runners setting off 5 minutes later. Andrew Pearson (Longwood Harriers) made his intentions clear from the gun, quickly hitting the front along with Mike Burrett (Leeds).

Competitors in the wheelchair race stayed pretty much together for the entire course, though eventual winner Jason Richards (Wakefield Harriers) could be seen doing most of the pace setting. Jade Joner (New Marske Harriers) took second place 5 seconds a drift, with Steve Williamson (Wakefield Harriers) and Ian Thompson (New Marske Harriers) completing the field.

By the 7 mile mark Pearson had opened up a 2 minute lead over Burrett, with a group of three - James Askew (Aycliffe Running Club), John Matthew (Abbey Runners) and James Bulman (North York Moors AC) all in the running for the final podium place. Sarah Harris (Long Eaton RC) led the women’s race though 7 miles with Sarah Jarvis (Bingley Harriers) closely behind and Amy Green 3rd.

A mile and a half later as runners completed the out and back section before the run into the finish, and Pearson had added another 30 seconds to his lead – the closest anyone got to him was someone out for a Sunday run. Burrett was still a clear second, with Askew opening up a small gap in third. In the Ladies race Jarvis had opened up a 20 second lead over Harris, with Green still holding third.

Andrew Pearson took the tape in a time of 50 mins 10 secs, whilst over a minute slower than he ran in 2009, it was enough to see him crowed Northern 10 mile Champion (as well as Yorkshire and YVAA Champion). Burrett was second in 52 mins 59 secs with Askew third in 53 mins 44 secs, just ahead of James Bulman who had to be content with first Vet 40.

Sarah Jarvis increase her lead on the run in to record a time of 58 mins 38 secs, Harris was second in 59 mins 18 secs, with Jessica Nixon (Gateshead Harriers) having a storming finish to pip Amy Green for third.
