Dewsbury 10K

06th February 2011
Almost 1000 runners took the start of the Dewsbury 10K race on Sunday where they met warmer conditions than normal (usually sub zero temperatures). Whilst many where hoping for PB’s on the flat fast course, strong winds hampered their efforts. A select few were chasing the £400 on offer for the first male and female finishers, thanks to the very generous sponsorship of Disken & Co. Solicitors.

As the race headed out of town centre many of the pre-race favourites could be seen at the head of affairs. Andy Ward (Clowne Road Runners), winner of a number of 10K races in previous months looked comfortable at the front, along with 2010 runner-up Matthew Bowser (City of Sheffield).

By the turn (5K) Neil Renault (Edinburgh AC) held a small lead over the field, a lead he held all the way to the finish to record a time of 30 mins 41 secs despite a strong headwind in the second half, Matthew Bowser repeated his second place of last year with a time of 30 mins 58 secs (one minute exactly slower than 2010), with Chris Davis (Telford AC) in third (31:07). In the team event Leeds City AC were first, Hallamshire second and Holmfirth third.

The Ladies race saw Alyson Dixon (Chester le Street) dominate the race, clearly showing the benefits of altitude training in Kenya - finishing with over two minutes to spare on her nearest rival - and a PB to go with the £400 1st place prize thanks to the very generous sponsorship of Disken & Co. Solicitors. Sarah Harris (Long Eaton Running Club) narrowly piped Julie Briscoe (Wakefield Harriers) for second. A special mention must also go to 17 year old Jennifer Walsh (Spenborough AC) for a very impressive run in 4th place.

Hallamshire Ladies went one netter than their male counter parts to take the team title from Holmfirth, with Valley Striders third.
